Why It’s Important For Fashion Houses to Connect With Their Customers.

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

You may or may not know that I do have a little love affair with fashion. Well, being that I was a Manager for Wet Seal for seven years and then went on to work for Nordstrom – it’s no surprise that the fashion industry is in my blood. So, when I find another customer service blogger (whom I admire, by the way) talking about the fashion industry – well, I get a little excited…

Susan Abbott of Customer Experience Crossroads has a Q&A session about co-creation and fashion brands. If there’s any industry out there that should be co-creating with consumers, it’s the fashion industry. Imagine being able to work with Isaac Mizrahi and letting him know what you do and don’t like about his designs for Target — then being able to offer your input as to what you feel would be great styles to create.

Fashion is a very subjective industry in that everyone has their own sense of style. However, if you are a fashion house, I feel that it’s important to connect with your core customer in order to find out what they’re wearing on a day-to-day basis and what compels them to buy a certain item. With fashion changing minute-by-minute (literally!) you want to make sure the bulk of your collection is something that people are going to buy and not end up on the sale rack next week – which happens quite a bit. But it doesn’t have to be that way if you know exactly what your customers want. What better way to know than to co-create with them?

By the way, Isaac, if you’re reading this…Can you make this jacket in white as well?

Women’s Fashion Accessories Make The Outfit !

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Today’s woman wants to be polished and stylish looking at all times, and women’s fashion accessories by today’s leading designers makes it possible without breaking the bank on clothing. These days, many women are realizing that while their weight fluctuates and many clothing trends don’t work for everyone, accessories like leather handbags or inexpensive fashion jewelry works for every body.
For years fashion was dictated primarily by what the designers were showing in clothing with almost no focus on the finishing touches like purses or earrings. It’s no longer the case now that many designers are creating their own line of handbags and other fashion accessories. In fact, many designers today will tell you that you can make or break a look depending on the accessories you choose.
Even the most luxurious outfit can look half-finished if you don’t include a stylish leather handbag or compliment a beautiful blouse with a few pieces of attractive fashion jewelry. The real advantage, of course, is that you can greatly increase the number of looks you have in your closet without buying any more clothes. The right accessories can completely transform a look from professional office attire to night-on-the-town chic. What better way to move quickly from day into evening?

Leather Handbags are Functional Classics.
You’ll have to look long and hard to find a woman who doesn’t take her handbag with her everywhere, yet many women only own a few purses. Fashion designers today suggest that instead of relying on just a few “plain Jane” standbys, you should invest in several handbags that are made from high quality leathers and make a real statement about your personality and style.
To make switching from one handbag to another simpler, invest in a few small, zippered makeup bags and put your stuff in them. One for makeup and one for essentials such as change, your keys, pens and other incidentals will make changing from one purse to another easy.

Boutique Fashion Jewelry and Accessories.
A neutral suit can change looks completely if you switch out the accessories. To make sure you have a signature look that doesn’t mimic a thousand others on the street, look for unusual and stylish accessories at boutique style stores that specialize in specific high-end designers that create unusual, signature pieces.
Slacks and a blouse can be daytime casual with a canvas hobo bag and a funky, oversized bracelet and earrings. For evening, switch to one of today’s great leather handbags in a rich crocodile style or a small metallic clutch and replace the oversized jewelry with a long strand of faceted jet beads or a delicate marcasite necklace set with precious stones.
By investing in lots of different women’s fashion accessories like silk scarves, jewelry and handbags, you can update the outfits you love without having to overhaul your entire wardrobe. You’ll be the envy of your friends, who will wonder how you always manage to look so great and where you get all those fabulous, trendy looks.

Three Kinds Of Baby Clothes !

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

When buying baby clothes parents are suddenly inundated with multiple choices that can become quite confusing. How many cute and adorable outfits does little Bill or Hillary need? How many “Onesie” body suits are enough? For little people that grow so quickly there are certainly a wide variety of clothing options, how does a new parent know what to get?
To help settle the dilemma and answer these questions, parents need to keep in mind a simple “rule of three.” Babies need three kinds of clothes. Clothes are needed for daytime wear, for going out, and for sleeping. The baby sleepwear will likely outnumber the other varieties since sleeping is what babies spend most of their time doing, but the numbers of each outfit will vary in direct relation to the number of times the parents are willing to do laundry.

Baby Daywear.
The clothes you have for your baby to “hang around” in should be comfortable, easy to access for diaper changes, and simple. These are the articles that your baby will spend most of her time in and they’re bound to get dirty. When the baby spits up, spews strained beets all over the place, crawls around on the floor, or does any of the other relatively messy and somewhat disgusting things that babies do, these clothes are going to bear the brunt of the abuse. As such, you probably don’t want these things to happen while baby is wearing the beautiful Baby Dior outfit that Aunt Edna gave as a shower gift. The best clothes for these day to day needs are simple body suits with snaps at the crotch. Onesies are a brand name of these items, but the term has pretty much entered the language to mean any such article designed this way. You’ll probably want anywhere between five and ten of these on hand.

Baby Sleepwear.
Clothing for sleeping should meet some of the same specifications as the baby daywear in terms of comfort and accessibility. Obviously if you live in a colder region or it is the middle of December you’ll want heavier articles than if you live in Phoenix and its July. Babies can still be messy when they sleep, but are usually nowhere near as messy as when they’re up and

The World Of Fashion Design.

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

The world of fashion is one that has the eyes and ears of a vast amount of people; we watch television, read magazines, and stay tuned to see what the rich and famous are wearing from day to day – and we follow suit. Fashion can change perceptions, impact an entire retail economy, and influence a generation. It’s no wonder that more and more people are interested in joining the world of fashion design.

Fashion design entails the creation and manufacturing of clothing styles. Fashion designers work based on seasons – they design, create, and then introduce their line of clothing on the fashion runways. The clothing that is well-received suddenly makes its way to Hollywood where actors and actresses come decked out in the latest fashion to the latest movie premiers. And what happens on that carpet trickles down to the masses making its way to retail outlets all over the country in more affordable forms.

Fashion design can be a fantastic career journey but it requires a vast amount of skill, education, and hard work. Those interested in fashion design should already possess an innate ability to create beautiful design and effectively communicate them on paper. Such creative fashion enthusiasts should be sure to supplement their skill with formalized education. A fashion design school will teach the fundamentals of design, drawing to scale, textiles, fabrics, sewing, and manufacturing. An education such as this can open up many doors in fashion design.

Following a school program – or even in conjunction with a school program – those pursuing a career in fashion design should be sure to involve themselves in an internship or apprenticeship with a reputable design house. The experience gained in this capacity is unmatched and will begin building your portfolio – your most important tool in a fashion design career.

Fashion design can be a wonderful career filled with adventure, creativity, and a chance to influence clothing choices all across the nation and even around the world.

Fashion with a Cause, 7 Brands That Make a Difference!

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

The world of fashion has avoided getting involved in causes, activism, however, is “in” with superstars like Bono leading the charge. If you want your body and your conscience to feel good in jeans, here are seven brands you should know about.
The world of fashion has avoided getting involved in causes, activism, however, is “in” with superstars like Bono leading the charge. He says “We have got to find ways of making our activism sexy, and fashion is it.”

1. Lee Jeans sponsors Lee National Denim Day, the largest single day fund raiser for the Women’s Cancer Programs of the EFI. 2. Citizens of Humanity donates a portion of every jean sale to Conservation International to help preserve the earth’s natural heritage. 3. Levi’s will jump into the cause in November 2006 with a new organic line of jeans call Levi’s Eco. It will feature recycled buttons, zippers, and natural colored stitching. 4. Edun Jeans, started by Rock Star Bono and his wife, are made of organic cotton and assembled in fair trade factories. 5. Loomstate was one of the first denim brands to use only organic cotton. They support organic farming and a sustainable future. 6. (Project)Red, a new eco clothing line includes styles form several top brands, including gap jeans. Profits go to the fight against diseases in third world countries. 7. Del Forte Denim, new to the premium denim scene, is just getting recognized for their use of organic cotton and supporting sustainable farming practices.

Here is a little bit about each of these causes and why they are so important:

Organic Cotton: Why is Organic Cotton important? If you are like me, socially aware, but slightly cheap, you may not readily recognize the value of organic clothing. Organic food makes sense, we eat that stuff and we don’t want those chemicals in our bodies. But Cotton? That’s something we wear not ingest. What I didn’t realize was that the value of organic cotton is not about direct contact, like food, but is about the direct impact on the environment, (which is direct contact, but ….uh, indirectly). Organic cotton does not use pesticides and the land is renewed by rotating crops, leaving a much smaller environmental footprint. Some interesting facts: * 10% of all pesticides in the U.S. are sold for use on cotton crops * 7 of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton are classified by the EPA as “possible”, “likely”, “probable”, or “known” human carcinogens * It takes 2/3 a pound of pesticides to make one pair of jeans
Fair Trade: We hear about Fair Trade a lot, but what exactly is it? Basically, Fair Trade companies are those that treat their employees, well for lack of a better word, fairly. A fair trade partnership works to provide low-income farmers and artisans with a living wage for their work. In the fashion world, this means none of those sweat shop conditions that we are so used to hearing about. Along with acceptable working conditions, some of the fair trade criteria for certification are: * Fair local wage * Environmentally sustainable practices * Healthy and safe working conditions.
Conservation International: Conservation International is a leader in global biodiversity conservation. Biodiversity, the variety of all forms of life, is greatly affected by human activities worldwide. Conservation International works to restore environments and endangered species. They also enlist the help and support of surrounding communities and teach people how to sustain their culture and livelihood while still respecting their environment. Organic Cotton anyone? * In natural evolution 1 to 5 species become extinct each year, In our current speeded up extinction spasm, we are loosing over 2 dozen species per day * The number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years. * The flow of ice from glaciers in Greenland has more than doubled in the last decade.
Lee National Denim Day: Lee National Denim Day is an annual October event that raises money for Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. This one day event has raised over $61 million for Breast Cancer prevention and research over the past 10 years. With the cooperation of companies everywhere, Lee encourages donations by allowing employees to wear their jeans to work for the day in exchange for a $5 donation. Facts about breast cancer: * The average woman has a 1 in 8 chance of getting some form of breast cancer in her lifetime * Regular mammograms reduce breast cancer mortality rates by 33% * The mortality rate of breast cancer has decreased about 2.8% every year since 1990 * 1% of breast cancer cases every year occur in men * Under wire bras do not cause breast cancer * Green Tea is thought to help in the prevention of breast cancer.
